We were in Florence for Easter Sunday and got to see the Easter tradition of “explosion of the cart.” It is held outside of the main duomo (cathedral) and involves the 30ft tall Easter cart (in use for more than 500 years!) being lit with fireworks for a good 15-20 min. We went early enough to be close to the action and could hear the prayers and hymns which really added to the overall atmosphere of the event. A successfully display is supposed to indicate a good harvest and good business for the upcoming year. A lot of religious and symbolic meaning historically but still fun to experience on Easter Sunday. It’s the only time you’ll see fireworks in the day time in Florence 🙂
